Animated History of 20th Century Hairstyles
Video by Bernard Ory for The Atlantic.
The history of hairstyles in the 20th century is a lively one, with fast-paced fashions made even more memorable by show-stopping hairstyles. Ranging from the Gibson girl chignon, to the first appearance of the bob, Lucille Ball's poodle cut and Farrah Fawcett's feathered hair, it was a century filled with fast-paced hairstyling changes that quickly broke the Victorian beauty mold, created truly new looks and drove beauty innovations at lightning speed.
What's missing: Sassoon's reinvention of the bob and The Rachel, two of the most iconic hairstyles of the 20th century. Even so, this trip down memory lane is not only entertaining, but in some respects, surprising. The flat top, for instance, first became popular in 1915, as evidenced by many period photos, including one of German field marshal Paul von Hindenburg.
