Jamie King, Amanda Seyfried and Emily Blunt named Style Hits at the Broadcast Critics Choice Awards
Joico Celebrity Hairstylist George Papanikolas certainly had the hottest seat in the house for observing the glam hair looks that lit up the Red Carpet at Hollywood's Broadcast Critics Choice Awards.
Papanikolas provided some style commentary on KTLA 5 with host Sam Rubin.
Papanikolas commented on the evening's brightest stars and their style "hits" and "misses." Who topped his list for the absolute hottest hair of the evening? A trio of luminaries earned his votes!
The Winner: Jamie King's Mega-Watt Blonde and Retro Waves
Why she won: "Jamie's golden, buttery blonde was the perfect choice for her fair skin," says Papanikolas. "It's hard to create the perfect pale hue for such a light complexion-it's usually platinum-and too harsh. This color is bright and flattering."
Papanikolas also gives credit to King for her classic, side-swept waves. "Jamie has a blunt haircut-no layers-and that's why this look is so fresh and current. If she had layers, it would have looked like a 'period' hairstyle."
Get the color: To recreate King's sparkling blonde shade, lighten the hair with a high lift ash formula, powered with lightening booster. Then add lots of fine highlights, processed to a soft baby blonde.
Base: 3/4 oz. Joico Vero K-PAK Color HLA + 1/4 oz. Lightening Booster + 40-volume Veroxide.
Foil highlights: Equal parts Joico VeroLight Lightener + 10-volume Veroxide OR
Balayage highlights: Joico VeroLight Lightener + 40-volume Veroxide
Get the style: Apply Joico JoiWhip Firm Hold Design Foam to clean, damp hair, from the roots to midlengths. Blow dry hair with a Mason Pearson-style styling brush, lifting strands out and away from the scalp to encourage maximum volume.
Curl small sections with a 1-inch curling iron. Pin each curl in place. Mist hair with Joico Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo. When curls cool, release the pins and brush through. Slick hair tightly against the head on one side, and bring all strands around to the opposite side. Secure the hair behind the ear with pins and mist with Joico Power Spray Fast-Dry Finishing Spray.
Emily Blunt |
Second Place: Emily Blunt's Warm Honey Blonde and Faux Bob
"The fact that this faux bob was set in retro waves combines two super-hot trends," says Papanikolas. "This honey color is a beautiful, flattering blonde shade for a natural brunette."
Get the color: Quickly break the base to soften the contrast on this natural Level 6. Then apply heavy balayage highlights throughout the crown area and around the face. Tone with a "clarified" sandy blonde.
Base break: Equal parts Joico Base Breaker + 20-volume Veroxide.
Balayage highlights: Joico VeroLight Lightener + 40-volume Veroxide.
Toner: Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome 1/2 oz. N9 + 1/2 oz. Clear + 2 oz. Activator
Get the style: Apply Joico Power Whip Whipped Foam to clean, damp hair and remove all moisture with a blow dryer.
Divide the hair into small sections, set each one with a 1-inch curling iron and clip into place.
Mist with Joico Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo, cool and remove the clips.
Brush each section through and then backcomb in order to create a solid form.
Roll the backcombed ends up and under to the desired "faux" length and pin the hair into place around the head.
Finish with Joico Power Spray Fast-Dry Finishing Spray.
Amanda Seyfried |
Third Place: Amanda Seyfried's Creamy, Rich Blonde and Twisted Topknot
"Amanda's twisted updo is a chic and youthful evolution of a traditional chignon," says Papanikolas. "It's dramatic and slightly edgy."
Get the color: Amanda famously eschews haircolor, but if you're not blessed with her beautiful hue, Papanikolas recommends a few strategically-placed balayage highlights to create natural-looking dimension.
Balayage highlights: Joico VeroLight Lightener + 40-volume Veroxide
Get the style: Mist dry hair from roots to midlengths with Joico Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo.
Using a Mason Pearson-style brush, gather all strands into a high, sleek ponytail.

Divide the ponytail into sections and work a small amount of Joico Creme Wax through each section.
Separate the ponytail in half and braid the hair in a loose, two-strand braid.
Tuck in the ends, arrange the braid and pin into place.
Gently loosen each section of the braid by pulling at the sides and then mist with Joico Power Spray Fast-Dry Finishing Spray.
