Working Smarter Not Harder
by Jamie CarrollJamie, what's your favorite trend that doesn't depend on the season?
My favorite trend would be cropped rounded/page boy looks with a lot of polish and fullness.
Do you have any professional tricks for a perfect hairdo you want to share with our readers?
In my latest Jamie Carroll DVD ”Variations”, we use a make-up brush to smooth the fly-away hair with spray.
What makes a good haircut?
A good haircut should suit the client's face shape, their lifestyle, and be easy to manage. A good haircut shouldn't need hours of
styling. If it does, then it is not the right shape.
And a good hairstylist?
A good hairstylist is one who listens to the client's individual needs by providing a thorough consultation, isn't afraid to continue to be educated with new techniques, is passionate about hair, and can add that creative flair to a hairstyle. A good hairstylist makes the client feel special at all times and provides consistent service.
So, what should a good stylist learn besides cutting/styling/coloring techniques?
Communication skills are essential, how to work in a team environment, and definitely not to let their ego get the better of them.
What do you like and dislike about your job?
I love that I can influence a person's look and make them feel better about them selves. I dislike that I find it difficult to spend enough time with family and friends.
What kind of hairdresser activities do you consider the most profitable?
Educating our customers on how we think, both locally and globally, and to make sure we deliver results orientated services. This insures more then a 90% retention rate. I try to learn something new about every new market I enter. And, people mostly want the same thing: education delivered in different ways.
What are the peculiarities of Australian hairdressing market?
Tall poppy syndrome (once you achieve success others around you can make it difficult to maintain a high standard). If you think like number two, then you have a greater chance of maintaining a higher standard.
What can you tell us about the US market?
Working in America you need to be consistent with your skills and the message that you are trying to portray as US customers probably go to beauty salons more than anywhere else in the world.
And what hairdo would you advise for a Xmas party?
Out, flowing styles with natural movement creating a bouncy blow wave.
