Fearless Hair Fashion
On a mission to reignite stylists' fervor for fearless hair fashion, Sebastian Professional's team of top artists is jet-setting cross-country-through April 2013-to educate stylists and salon owners. They're also providing tools to inspire each artist's inner rock star. During this eight-month educational stint, Sebastian will host a series of inspirational and hands-on educational events in 24 major markets.
The first stop was New York City, where Sebastian's top educators spent three days showcasing new looks and styling techniques. On September 16, Sebastian's top artists Anthony Cole and Michelle Lee made their debut at The Altman Building, where they led a captivated audience through an inspirational show, which taught stylists how to create unique looks from Sebastian's new education series, 'Vanity Rocks' from 'Nightshade Masquerade'-a collection of hairstyles created with the Flaunt portfolio of products.
Before the show HOT ventured backstage to catch some of the model prepping and primping. Sebastian's Education Manager Christina McCarver was on hand to offer some insight into each innovative look. Joining her were artists Anthony Cole, Michelle Lee and other stylists who were readying models for the runway.
"Sebastian works by collection and was inspired by shine," says Christina McCarver, Education Manager, Sebastian. "After volume, shine is most coveted by women."
In other news, Sebastian relaunched its What's Next Awards-a national facebook-based competition that dares stylists to create and then flaunt their best bold hair fashion. In celebration of the End-to-End Shine Collection, which debuted in August 2012, the theme of the awards is outstanding, multi-dimensional shine.
The contest runs through February 2013 and is open to all registered stylists. What's more-Sebastian's design team will be present at each of the six What's Next Tour stops to provide on-site mentoring. In March 2013 eight finalists will be chosen to attend a final live event being held in Los Angeles in April. There they'll compete for the grand prize: styling backstage at New York's Fashion Week in September. They'll also have a highly coveted opportunity to style for an editorial shoot.
"We're taking different approaches-one for professionals (who are licensed one year or more) and one for students," says McCarver. "This fits in with our equity and What's Next philosophy. People always find inspiration in what the youth are doing."
How-To by Sebastian Stylist Design Team Lead Artist Anthony Cole
On achieving "shrimp blonde" hair color:
- Use the in-salon treatment Cellophanes in Pearl Blonde and add a dot of Red Red.
The best way to tell if you have enough red or too much red is to blot the color onto a white towel. The color that shows on the white towel will be the hue you get in the hair.
On styling the pixie cut:
- Section off the bangs. Smooth the surface and shape into a perfect oval line, using Shine Define to keep it in place.
- Spray Trilliant over the rest of the hair. Blow dry and create texture on the sides using your fingers.
- Fix the shape and finalize with Shine Define.
