Meeting of the Masters
The Mastery Salon and Academy opened its doors in a rather grandiose way. It's not often one finds luminaries such as Tabatha Coffey of hit reality show "Tabatha Takes Over," Paul Mitchell co-founder and CEO John Paul DeJoria and Robert Cromeans, Global Artistic Director for Paul Mitchell and Owner of "A Robert Cromeans Salon;" seated on the same couch in a chat show-style setting, discussing their ideas on "mastery."
Created and led by award-winning hairdresser/educator Lucie Doughty and Business "Outlier" Arlene Lyons, "The Mastery" is a first-of-its-kind five-star beauty salon and master-level academy. Exploiting the rich intersection of creativity and structure in its Beauty Mastery and Business Mastery Programs, it was crafted especially for hairdressers and salon managers/owners; and for salon guests yearning for personalized attention and predictably superior service.
The opening event was a fully packed house with an audience of 230 hairdressers, community leaders, salon owners, cosmetology school owners and small business owners. Attendees arrived Red Carpet style to a group of cheering Mastery prospects. Inside, masterfully coiffed models upped the "it" factor.
Lucie Doughty, co-owner and creative leader of The Mastery and Editorial Director for John Paul Mitchell Systems introduced the event. "A place for hairdressers, which marries the art and business of hair," says Doughty. "Our industry will only get stronger from this education."
"Arlene Lyons, co-owner and business leader of The Mastery and recent recipient of the "Business Outlier" award from Malcolm Gladwell challenged the audience by adapting a particularly apt quote from Albert Einstein.
She said, "To pursue the cause of Mastery in the beauty industry will demand the very strength and soul not only of those who enroll, but of all of you here today, who share its lofty goals."
After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the headline speakers - all industry luminaries - were interviewed together, "Inside the actor's studio" style, by Atlanta radio's Dave.fm's Mara Davis. When John Paul DeJoria arrived onstage, he said, "What we're doing here today, what's being opened up here, is something that should have happened 10, 20, 30 years ago. Boy does our industry need you guys here!"
On the art side, The Mastery Designers and Design Stylists, led by Doughty, worked feverishly to create trend-setting cuts, colors and styles.
